The Nickname Trend

I tried the nickname trend on TikTok, and although I didn’t put everything there, it made me realise the different names people have for me.

My mum calls me “Aba” or “Aba Akwaa”. My older sister calls me “Abs” and my baby sister calls me a variety of names, ranging from “sugar mummy” because I’m her self-appointed sugar mummy to “Adwoa Essoun” or “Maame”, which is the name of my paternal grandmother whom I was named after.

Most people in my life call me by my middle name “Aba” or they join my middle and last name “Aba Arthur”, and although both have a distinct spelling, everyone has a different way of mentioning my names. I used to dislike how people mentioned “Aba Arthur”, but I’ve come to like it and understand that it’s their own special way of calling me.

Looking back on my life, I’ve had many nicknames, all given to me by different people in my life. I haven’t seen most of them in a long time, but one thing I’m sure of is that the nicknames they had for me years ago will always be revived if I meet them again.

Names hold so much meaning to us and to the people who give them to us, and personally, I love my name because I believe that it’s the perfect name for me.

What are the nicknames your people have for you, and what do they mean to you?
